If you had told me eight years ago that if I looked to the West I'd be looking at the Chicago Google headquarters, and looked to the North I'd be staring at the Ace Hotel, I'd have asked for some of whatever you're drinking. Yet, here we are. 2020. Our lease is up, the time of the independent restaurant is coming to a close, and it's time for us to say goodbye to 945 W Fulton Market.

I've been truly moved by the outpouring of emotion and support for La Sirena - it's validating to know we were able to create such a sense of community in a little joint on a corner in the middle of nowhere. The truth of the matter is that so much of the soul of the place lies in her floors, walls and ceilings that it seemed wrong to try to move her.

We've been blessed with a remarkable team from day one - they are the reason the place is magic to so many people. So, for the remainder of 2019 there are still caipirinhas to be drunk, moqueca to be eaten, and many many stories to tell at "the mermaid shack".

The West Loop’s La Sirena Clandestina recalls the sneak-away beachside joints of coastal Brazil that inspired its name, “hidden mermaid.” Executive Chef/Partner John Manion serves Latin-local cuisine influenced by his childhood spent in Brazil as well as two decades of cooking in Chicago. Earning recognition as a Jean Banchet “Best Neighborhood Restaurant,” La Sirena Clandestina’s menu-defining dishes include pao de queijo (Brazilian cheese bread), moqueca (seafood stew in coconut broth) and the restaurant’s formative whole fried fish. With a lively bar program distinguished by caipirinhas, pisco sours, fortified wines and unique non-alcoholic offerings such as tepache, a sweet fermented pineapple juice, the intimate 40-seat restaurant-bar hybrid continues to retain its indie atmosphere with vibrant food and music.
